Fate of India’s Test Squad: BCCI’s Plans For Rebuilding After England Series

With India’s difficult tour of England in 2025 coming to an end, and varied results across England, conversations about the future of India’s national side are now very much in the public realm. With the Test side led by a new generation at the helm, and outside noise increasing, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning a total shake-up that will change the composition of the squad and possibly the support staff as well.

Key Rebuilding Plans And Changes

1. Change to the Support Staff

Reports indicate that the BCCI is planning a significant overhaul of coaches following a five-match series in England that highlighted many weak points. While Gautam Gambhir as head coach is immune during this period of rebuilding, both the bowling coach Morne Morkel and assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate are set to leave their roles after a report on their performance. The confirmation of this decision is likely to happen after the Asia Cup 2025, which goes to indicate the seriousness and urgency of the BCCI’s intent to replace its strategic support.

2. Player Selections Are Under The Microscope

There is no denying that there is a generational shift in the team. The squad was led by Shubman Gill, captain, with Rishabh Pant, vice-captain. The previously experienced players, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Aswin, all have now retired, leaving the squad relatively young and with little Test experience, in that only two players have played over fifty Tests matches, whilst the majority of the squad have little to no Test matches in their careers. This shift is a clear move to set India’s next core group up for success in the long-term, and to give players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, and others time to develop.

3. If You Put a Head Coach in Place, Then the Sniffing will Go Away

Along with the restructuring of the coaches, the chief selector Ajit Agarkar is also under some scrutiny, as it appeared friction was beginning to build between the team management and the selectors on some decisions which included [the dropping of] wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, seeming inclination of the team management to ‘play only all-rounders at the expense of specialists.’  As the restructuring takes place, there should be a precise and transparent selection process and a consistent focus on defending the selection decisions.

4. Young Players and Injuries

The most recent tour resulted in some young players getting their debuts, including star Anshul Kamboj who was given the opportunity based on injuries to a couple of players in the main squad. With results mixed at best, the BCCI and the management team—with support for this from a few players including Ravichandran Ashwin—are highlighting patience with the emerging talent, reinforcing that consistency is key for them to move forward.

5. A New Leadership Group

The rise of Shubman Gill into the captaincy role and new partnership with Rishabh Pant to form a new leadership group for India, will allow the team to focus on working towards giving these young leaders the time and space needed to build a new Test team and take back that superiority.

Looking Ahead: What Will the Outcome Be for Indian Cricket?

The BCCI is bold and might just usher in a new era of Test supremacy, or they ultimately find themselves in the order of the day in a transition, if consistency and balance cannot be met. The outcome of the Asia Cup 2025 and upcoming Test calendars will create a measure against the success of any transformation. Whilst any structures are being modified, not only will there be a clear direction on developing skills, there is also an equally important focus on mental toughness and team balance.
