Europe is blessed with some of the finest sailing waters in the world. From tiny Greek islands and medieval Croatian harbour towns to the glamorous coastline of the French Riviera, there is an extraordinary amount of choice for anyone planning a sailing holiday.

But if you had to narrow it down to just three destinations, where should you go?  Spoiler alert: Greece, Croatia and the South of France.

More specifically, we think the three best places to start are Lefkas in Greece, Split in Croatia and Antibes on the French Riviera. Each offers something completely different, but all three combine beautiful sailing, fantastic scenery, great food and plenty of places to explore ashore.

1. Lefkas, Greece

If you want the classic Greek sailing holiday, Lefkas is hard to beat.

Situated in the Ionian Sea, Lefkas gives you access to an exceptional collection of islands within relatively easy sailing distance. From here you can explore Meganisi, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Kalamos and Kastos, while longer trips can take you towards Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu.

What makes the area particularly appealing is the combination of sailing and scenery. The water is wonderfully clear, the islands are green and mountainous, and there are countless secluded bays where you can stop for a swim. In the evening, you can tie up alongside a small harbour and walk straight ashore for dinner at a traditional taverna.

The sailing itself is generally relaxed, particularly compared with areas such as the Cyclades. The Ionian is relatively sheltered, with generally moderate summer winds, making it an excellent choice for families and less experienced sailors while still providing plenty of enjoyable sailing.

And that’s the real attraction of Lefkas: you don’t have to choose between great sailing and a relaxing holiday. You get both.

2. Split, Croatia

If Greece is about secluded bays and traditional tavernas, Split is about island-hopping.

Split is arguably the perfect gateway to Croatia’s Dalmatian Islands, putting some of the Adriatic’s most famous destinations within easy reach. Hvar, Brač, Šolta and Vis are all accessible from the city, while the Pakleni Islands and countless smaller coves provide endless opportunities to drop the anchor.

Croatia’s great advantage is its compact geography. The islands sit relatively close together, so you can spend your holiday moving from one beautiful destination to another without spending entire days at sea. The sheltered channels also make the sailing particularly approachable.

There is also a wonderful variety of places to visit. One night you might be swimming off a deserted island; the next you’re exploring the ancient streets of Hvar or enjoying seafood beside a medieval harbour.

Croatia also has an excellent marina network, making it particularly easy to combine sailing with comfortable overnight berthing.

For a first sailing holiday, or for anyone who wants to pack a lot into a week, Split is difficult to beat.

3. Antibes, South of France

And then there is the French Riviera.

Starting from Antibes puts you right in the middle of one of Europe’s most glamorous stretches of coastline. This is sailing with a very different flavour: instead of tiny Greek tavernas or secluded Croatian islands, you have elegant waterfront towns, Michelin-starred restaurants, sophisticated beach clubs and some of the world’s most famous superyachts.

From Antibes, you can explore the Côte d’Azur towards Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Nice and Monaco, while the Îles de Lérins offer beautiful anchorages just offshore.

The attraction isn’t simply the glamour. The coastline is genuinely spectacular, with dramatic cliffs, turquoise water and beautiful Mediterranean towns backed by the Alps. You can spend the morning swimming from the yacht, have lunch ashore in a waterside restaurant and finish the day watching the sunset over the Riviera.

It is also an excellent option for combining a sailing holiday with a little luxury. If you want your yacht charter to feel like part sailing adventure, part European summer holiday, the French Riviera is the obvious choice.

So, which should you choose?

All three destinations are exceptional, but they offer very different experiences.

Choose Lefkas for beautiful islands, clear water, traditional Greece and relaxed sailing.

Choose Split for easy island-hopping, historic towns, excellent marinas and plenty of variety.

Choose Antibes for the French Riviera, glamorous ports, exceptional restaurants and a more luxurious style of sailing.
