What you need to know about travelling by bus in India?

How to travel in India with a bus, including how to book a bus in India?

In India, buses are used for a variety of reasons. Buses can be economical, environmentally friendly, pocket-friendly and efficient.

Every time you travel, you can have a unique experience. You will be able to become part of the world outside and interact with people when the bus stops at a rest stop.

Buses can also be a reliable and trusted mode of transport, as they are affordable. The streets of India offer a truly authentic experience.

Which is better for India, the bus or the train?

I’ll be honest. If you have money to spend and you want to travel a long distance, then travelling by plane would be my recommendation. You can save time, and often the airfare is not too expensive.

As an example, a couple of years ago I booked a flight to Mumbai from Kerala . It was only 40 dollars because I had bought it well in advance. It would have taken 12 hours to travel by train or bus!

For short distances, it is more comfortable to travel by bus than by train, at the same cost, unless you opt for a Deccan Odyssey, a luxury Indian train. It’s simple: you get better seats, air conditioning (essential in India’s hot regions) and fewer people.

If you need to use the toilet, you can ask your driver to make a stop at a nearby gas station. What’s not to like?

How to book a bus in India?

Now that you have decided to travel to India by bus, your next question is: How do I do bus booking in India?

You don’t need to worry, as the process is quite straightforward. There are three options for booking: either in person or through a tour operator, travel agent, or online.

At the Bus Station

It is very easy to book your bus ticket at the station itself. Just show up a few days prior to your departure.

Bus stations are often located in remote areas, so you may end up wasting time.

If you are able to avoid it, I would not recommend booking directly unless there is no other option.

Use a Travel Agent

You can book all your travel in India through Travel Agents or Tour Companies. This includes flights, hotels, buses, trains and more.

This is an excellent option for people who are short of time or who do not mind paying extra for someone to manage their bookings.

This is a very rare option for me in India, except when I go to very remote areas like Ladakh.

Is it safe to travel in India by bus?

Safety and danger are everywhere, as a wise man said, even at home.

Seat yourself near the driver if you are travelling alone. Talk to the locals and have fun. Their stories will transform a boring journey on the bus into an unforgettable journey through India.
